Mental Health Liberation and Anti-Psychiatry Movement Part 1
Category: Natural Acne Remedies | May 14, 2011 |
Dr. John Breeding, Ph.D. Psychologist talks about the mental health liberation movement, the anti-psychiatry movement, the movement against psychiatric oppression. Sometimes seen as antipsych or antipsychiary or anti-biological psychiatry. This is a movement made up mostly of ex-mental health consumers and the family members of ex-mental health consumers who feel they have been damaged by psychiatry. These people refer to themselves as psychiatric survivors. There are also several medical and mental health professionals that reject the belief system of biological psychiatry Links The Coalition for the Abolition of Electroshock in Texas www.endofshock.com Able Child Parents for Label and Drug Free Eduction http Law Project for Psychiatric Rights www.psychrights.org MindFreedom International http ECT dot org The Committee for Truth in Psychiatry www.ect.org Psychiatrist Peter Breggin’s website http International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology www.icspp.org International Coalition for Drug Awareness Ann Blake Tracy http Citizen’s Commission on Human Rights International www.cchr.org Al Siebert’s website http Chipmunka Publishing (specializes in books by psychiatric survivors) chipmunkapublishing.co.uk Visit Dr. Breedings website. http This video was produced by psychetruth. www.youtube.com www.livevideo.com www.myspace.com A better quality full length version of this video can be found on livevideo.com. www.livevideo.com
@pricey4486 Psychiatrists have no place in treating mental problems unless they stop using drugs. The drugs have no healing properties whatsoever -chemicalshave their effect by causing damage.
@BFMVLOVER11100 its a damn shame, may you still make your dreams come true and have a fullfilling life, you didnt need this shit to happen to you, but it did, and they should pay dearly for making you suffer like this.
@pricey4486 I agree about having an open mind. That is the biggest problem in the profession in my opinion. The claim that behavioral disorder is caused by neuro-development issues is a gross oversimplification that has little proof in most cases. However, too many decisions are made on this theory. I feel like there are, of course, many great psychiatrists. By and large, however, they serve the $2 trillion industry. Money runs everything after all, even medicine to a great degree
I have been on the following meds for what the doctors called “Bipolar I and II”…..(you can’t have two forms of one illness!):
Depakote
Risperdal
Lithium
Lamictal
Abilify
…..my memory of what happened during that time frame is still rather hazy. I was only 16 when it all happened. NO person under 18 should be drugged up like I was. Thankfully I am off meds. Parents, don’t put your children on pills…they are NOT approved for children under 18, and can damage a young mind/body.
@Cjulien91
As a fellow medical student I find your claim concerning. An open and critical mind is what is needed in our profession instead of feeding this nonsense. I hope that after you actually spend time in a psych unit you may be able to offer a more informed opinion of the work of psychiatrists and the role they play to advocate for those who need help the most

I’m getting ready to apply for medical school, and I had wanted to be a psychiatrist for a long time. After learning some neuroscience, however, it became increasingly clear to me that psychiatry has nearly no proof on top of which to base their claims. I don’t want to be a drug dealer, I want to help people.. It’s too bad what money can do to good fields like medicine. I guess I’ll be a neurologist instead. I’d rather earn my money the honest way and actually accomplish something
Sad to see that 27 people really need psychiatric drug treatment!!!
Thank you John Breeding for your understanding of the need to defend and stand up for people burt and to be burnt by psychiatry. As someone who has been arrested, forced to take unwanted drugs with bad side effects and driven OVER TWO HOURS IN FULL BODY SHACKLES down to a mental hospital on the other side of the state and finally put away for a week having to lie to be timely released only to come home to find that they gave my mom a nearly 5 figure bill. This shit’s got to end.
@furtherfarthest1 Actually, the idea of “biochemical imbalance” has more or less been completely disproven. Can you prove that psychiatric illness exists?
@idontknowwhattoputrn He’s a legalized drug pusher. Stop medicating & start thinking for yourself: it requires a much more courageous stance to take on the real structure of systematic exploitation, superficiality, indifference, disconnection, lethargy & dearth of meaningful, creative interactivity that cause most forms of depression, anxiety, etc. This is both an external & internal transformation that requires confronting the neurosis of our culture. What is life if we’re not up for the task?
As a recipient of Mental Illness, the only “oppression” I have been subject to is, the lack of understanding from society and “quacks” like John Breeding whom imply that mental illness doesn’t exist therefore it is “me” who is at fault and I am imagining that I have a biochemical imbalance. Prior to getting on psychotropic medications, I was debilitated and even lost my entire life savings from not being able to work and now, I am doing so much better and my life is finally going well.
I am not able to work because of a bone and muscle impairment. Even though I have at least 2 conditions mentioned in the social security blue book I have had people tell me I will never be approved for SSI because I am not taking medication. None of the movements seem to fit my situation. I have been trying to get SSI now for about 2 years. A food stamp case worker said all disabled people take pain or mental health meds. Is that true?
@neurozero
There was a PDF document about how Psychiatry took over the market and labeled Psychologists as not being real doctors. I personally thin tht Big Phamra wanted an army of workers to be their retailers or merchants for the outlet of their products. So they get a little more of a “Medical” education which in my opinion is Allopathic indoctrination. I personally wouldn’t see a psychiatrist or a psychologist because they are both creating a nice lifestyle for themselves.
Excellent. Psychiatry is yet another way to expand effective demand to create surplus profit. Many of these people are out of the system of Capital accumulation and are not part of the obedient workforce. So Big Medicine milks their insurance companies and transfers yet more wealth over to the top 1% of the wealthy class. But all the elements you speak of are important too.
The whole concept of psychiatry was developed well before1900 in Germany to get rid of people complaining.The first use of directed energy weapons can be recognized in psychiatric literature from1908.You find it in chapter Psychiatrie–>Klinik der Narkolepsie on my homepage.During the NAZI time this concept was given up as Germany just murdered oponents.It was relaunched directly after the war to persecute and silence concentration camp survivors
My brother Markus Bott had been murdered the BND
Good job – stand strong
why don’t you run the whole God damn country if you know best!?
My father was a physician, and he used to speak of the stages of the course of study to become an MD. Once the Doctorate is completed the Doctor does a residency in one of the areas of Medicine. My father said that he knew many Doctors who were either not succesfull in one or more fields of medicine ultimately choosing Psychiatry as their area of specialty. Makes one wonder doesn’t it?
i think its funny how there are meds out there for almost anything. funny as in F***ed up…its as if as a people we are giving in way too much to the idea of psychiatry as a solution…some things are meant to be dealt with naturally. and a lot, if not most, meds, are not a natural solution. usually there is a root cause for some feeling, depression, etc
@torturedbyshrinks whoa, any proof though?
@idontknowwhattoputrn
Why do you see a psychiatrist, instead try psychologist.
My medicine doctor spends less then 2 min with me and just refills my Rx and gets payed lot of money.
Lot of money is for lot of years/dollars spent to achieve title Dr.
